What I work on.

My week takes me between my own classroom, conversations with colleagues, and the practical work of developing a program. These are a few things I’ve been working on.

Working with colleagues

A teacher in a literature classroom and a teacher in a computing lab will have different questions about AI. I enjoy working through those questions with colleagues, starting with something they actually need to do.

I’ve led professional learning for around 30 faculty across disciplines. That work includes trying tools such as Gemini and NotebookLM together, writing a practical guide, and making time to discuss what needs checking before a result is used.

Canvas & educational technology

The part of teaching that happens before class.

I spend a lot of time on the details that make a course easier to follow. In Canvas, I prepare weekly pages, build assessments, and check that the code and questions arrive as intended. I plan the instructor materials alongside the student view, so the course is easier to teach as well as navigate.

Assessment

“Talk me through your thinking.”

When a student submits a working program, I want to understand the decisions behind it. I ask them to explain a choice or respond to a change in the problem. Those conversations have shaped my approach to assessment and the article I wrote for CSTA.

The courses & the lab

Room to follow a question further.

Teaching a first programming course and advising an AI research project are different kinds of work. I like having both in my week.

At St. Paul’s, I develop the CS program and help connect the courses with the laboratory. Students need a place to begin, then opportunities to go deeper as their interests take shape.

Research advising takes that a step further. Current projects explore visual-language-model navigation and a gaze-controlled robotic arm. I help students narrow the question, work through the prototype, and decide what their results can tell them.
